Famous Cricketers No 79 - Richard Hadlee
was very much part of the action. On the first day Hadlee (3-29) and the South African Watson (5-57) bowled out the tourists for 207 after the Australians had seemed to be in control at 146 for 2. The county’s three overseas players then all prospered with the bat. Hadlee made 68, Rice 90 and Watson 44 before Hadlee, 3 for 39, and Watson, 2 for 18, completed a fine all-round match as the tourists suffered a huge defeat. Hadlee’s best match figures in the few games he played in the County Championship were 8 for 75 against Hampshire and 6 for 63 against Leicestershire. In their second innings, Hampshire simply “crumbled against the pace and hostility” ( Wisden ) of Hadlee (5-32) and Rice (5-25) and were dispatched for 58. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 116.
