In a demanding and strenuous tour he had to work hard for his wickets: in Pakistan he faced batsmen who were completely at home in their own conditions and then in India he had to bowl on pitches which were responsive to spin. Even so, in the six Test matches he claimed 23 wickets and was the leading wicket-taker for New Zealand in each series and on the tour as a whole. He also managed to develop his batting in the Test series against Pakistan. In the Third Test at Karachi he did much to save New Zealand from defeat; at one time the Kiwis were in danger of being forced to follow on but Hadlee with 87, including three sixes and six fours, stayed for 179 minutes and put on 186 for the 7th wicket with Warren Lees (152). In doing so they created a seventh-wicket record for New Zealand in all Tests when they surpassed the previous record of 163 by Bert Sutcliffe (151*) and Bruce Taylor (105) against India at Calcutta in 1964/65. The last match of the tour, the Third Test against India at Madras, was marred by some controversial umpiring decisions. Hadlee was furious when early in India’s second innings his appeal for hit wicket against Anshuman Gaekwad – the leg bail had fallen to the ground – was rejected because he was in no doubt that the batsman had dislodged the bail with his bat. 18
