However, when he did return to the side he did little of note and was “quite lacking in confidence” (Hadlee) in the games leading up to the First Test against India. His best performance in these games was in the match with Auckland when he returned figures of 3 for 39 in the first innings and 3 for 23 in the second. Hadlee played in the Second Test at Christchurch but he had a dreadful match – 1 for 139 in 26 expensive overs. Everyone expected him to be dropped for the Third Test at Wellington but the selectors caused a great surprise by including him at the expense of Howarth and thus going into the match with four seam bowlers and no spinner.
