However, perhaps he was fortunate not to be selected for the First Test at the Basin Reserve as bowlers had an unenviable task as 1455 runs were scored for the loss of just 24 wickets. Hadlee replaced the Otago paceman, Murray Webb, for the Second Test. This turned out to be not only a “fascinating match” ( Wisden ) but a great occasion for New Zealand cricket – to beat Australia in a Test match! The Hadlee brothers captured twelve wickets between them, Richard’s share being seven, six of which were recognised batsmen. His victims included Ian Chappell (20) and Doug Walters (6) in the first innings while Greg Chappell (6) and Ian Redpath (58) fell to him in the second. At Auckland, the Australians were quick to take their revenge. A far from fit Richard Hadlee bowled poorly and New Zealand were well beaten as Australia levelled the series.
