In such circumstances, except for a fine performance in the Second Test at Sydney, Hadlee, without the support of two such experienced bowlers as Collinge and Taylor, had to struggle for his wickets and they were taken at high cost. Twice, against Australia in the First Test at Melbourne and in the match with Western Australia at Perth, Hadlee conceded a hundred runs in an innings without taking a wicket – the only instances during his first-class career. The Second Test at Sydney was the highlight of the tour not just for Hadlee but for New Zealand as well. Australia, dismissed for only 162 in their first innings, were set 456 to win and were reduced to 30 for 2 but rain washed out play on the final day. The Hadlee brothers took seven wickets between them in Australia’s first innings, Richard 4 for 33, Dayle 3 for 52. Richard also claimed both wickets when Australia batted again to end up with 6 for 49 in the match. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 23.
