Famous Cricketers No 79 - Richard Hadlee
Congdon (176) and Vic Pollard (116) staged a wonderful fightback with a stand of 177 for the 5th wicket in the second innings before the visitors eventually went down by 38 runs. Hadlee lost his place to Hedley Howarth for the Second Test – a match in which New Zealand were unable to force a win despite establishing a huge first innings lead of 298 with centuries from Congdon (175), Mark Burgess (105) and Pollard (105*).
