Raw and inexperienced, he proved rather expensive but he did take two wickets. When New Zealand batted he made a useful 46 coming in at no.8. Nevertheless, Hadlee lost his place for the Second Test at Dunedin to his brother Dayle who had been unfit for the Wellington Test. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 10. Alan Richards, reviewing the tour for the DB Cricket Annual , stated: “… it was a matter of regret that Richard Hadlee could not be found a berth in either the Second or Third Test sides. The 22-year-old Canterbury speedster looks likely to develop into a world-class Test bowler, and was the one member of the New Zealand attack capable of inducing a really hurried stroke.” Hadlee took time to find his feet but as the tour progressed his bowling improved and on the eve of the First Test he forced his way into the side with a fine performance against Lancashire. He took 8 for 94 in the match, including 5 for 56 in the second innings, the first time he had taken five wickets in an innings, while Dayle and Collinge accounted for the rest. The New Zealanders won convincingly by nine wickets. In the First Test at Trent Bridge Hadlee claimed only one wicket in the match for the cost of 143 runs. Although personally the match was a great disappointment for Richard, it proved a memorable one for New Zealand; Bevan 12
