Hadlee hit nine of these off the first four balls but was then bowled by Kapil Dev off the fifth ball and New Zealand lost by just one run. In the final against Australia at Auckland, Hadlee hit 79 but the Kiwis never really recovered from a shocking start, having been reduced to 33 for 5 after winning the toss and electing to bat. Trying to retrieve a lost cause, Hadlee stayed for 105 minutes and hit two sixes and five fours but Australia won this game easily by eight wickets with plenty of overs to spare. At the end of the summer Hadlee captained a New Zealand XI against a World XI in the first three of four one-day games as part of his testimonial season. After sustaining an injury while bowling in the first game at Christchurch, Hadlee played as a batsman in the remaining fixtures and in the last match, at Auckland, made 46* to give his New Zealand side a six-wicket victory. However, the World XI won the series 3-1. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 307.
