Surrey were in trouble at 72 for 5 – four wickets to Hadlee – but although they managed to make 204 for 9, the New Zealander ended with truly magnificent figures of 12-4-17-5. When Nottinghamshire batted Hadlee made 55 in fine style but received little support. Hadlee also displayed his talents as an all-rounder in the Benson and Hedges Cup. Against Lancashire he made 37 and returned figures of 4 for 53; then in the game with Essex he took 2 for 30 and scored 61* in only 57 balls, hitting three sixes and six fours. However, despite Hadlee’s brave efforts during the summer, Nottinghamshire still ended the season without a trophy in any of the four major domestic competitions.
