Both these games ended in victories for the Trent Bridge side but Nottinghamshire still failed to qualify for the semi-finals. Hadlee returned impressive figures during New Zealand’s World Cup campaign. Only against Pakistan, in the second encounter between the two sides at Trent Bridge, was he expensive. At The Oval England punished nearly all the New Zealand bowlers with Martin Snedden going for 105 runs from his twelve overs, but in stark contrast Hadlee conceded only 26 in his twelve. In New Zealand’s first game with Pakistan, at Edgbaston, Hadlee and Lance Cairns had their opponents three wickets down – two to Hadlee – without a run on the board and they never recovered. Outstanding figures of 5 for 25 by Hadlee ensured that the New Zealand batsmen did not have too big a target to chase against Sri Lanka at Bristol; then in the next match with England, Hadlee took 3 for 32 and scored a priceless 31 as New Zealand won by just two wickets with only one ball to spare. However, despite more splendid figures by Hadlee in the return game against Sri Lanka at Derby – he conceded only 16 runs in his twelve overs – New Zealand spoilt much of their previous good work when they went down by three wickets and eventually failed to qualify for the semi-finals. 115
