This pair put on 121 in only 110 balls for the sixth wicket and New Zealand went on to make the 297 required for victory. Hadlee faced 64 balls and hit one six and five fours in an innings lasting 74 minutes. A hamstring injury suffered by Hadlee in the game against Australia at Perth kept him out of the best of three finals. This was a grievous blow to his side and New Zealand, not surprisingly, lost both at Sydney and Melbourne for Australia to take the Cup. Before the Benson and Hedges series, Hadlee scored 117 in just 68 balls in a one-day game against Geelong and Districts. On the last occasion he played there he was regarded as the villain by an angry crowd but now he was the hero after a brilliant innings. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 135.
