Making three scores of over seventy and taking five wickets in an innings three times he booked his seat on this tour without a shadow of doubt. He was to team up with H.W.Taylor the stalwart of South African batting before the war and it is a fact that both these players who toured England three times each made over a thousand runs on all the tours. Taylor, a very fine player of fast bowlers with lightning reactions and twinkling footwork was offset by Mitchell, who much younger was a veritable colossus opening the innings with untold patience and stubbornness.
