Australia won every match bar one, drawn, all by enormous margins four by an innings, one by ten and the other by nine wickets. Not surprisingly his batting fell off a good deal making only one fifty and he could make no headway against the finger-spinners with Clarrie Grimmett getting him out on four occasions, Bill O’Reilly three, and Fleetwood-Smith once. From opener in the first three Tests he dropped down the order and top scored in one innings of the last two Tests making 48 out of 98 in the fourth game at Johannesburg. With the ball he surprisingly topped the South African bowling averages. In the second Test at Johannesburg he took 4 for 26 off 7.3 overs including a spell of 4 for 5 in 9 balls and three wickets in four balls and in the last Test match at Durban he took 5 for 87 in the first innings, his best Test analysis, and altogether took ten wickets in the series at an average of 33.00.
