In the Test matches he finished top of the averages with 322 runs average 32.20. In the first Test at Brisbane he batted for ninety minutes without adding to his score while making 58 and in the third Test at Brisbane caught six players in the slips which again equalled both he and A.E.E.Vogler’s South African record. He thus had the honour of doing the feat twice. In the fourth Test he made 75 and 95 and managed to drop ‘The Don’ who went on to 299. In this match he, together with H.W.Taylor, added 120 and 121 for the third wicket. Making a century on debut in New Zealand he, again with H.W.Taylor, added 167 for the third wicket against Auckland, which remains a record for this wicket by a South African team in New Zealand. With 166 runs in three innings including a century against New Zealand at Christchurch he added 196 with J.A.J.Christy (103) which remains the highest first wicket partnership between the two sides.
