Mitchell made 511 runs in all matches at an average of 51 with 455 in Tests, and showed that he had come to stay and apart from injury was never missing from a South African side until 1949. In the Test matches he made one hundred, 123 at Cape Town and four fifties and took 12 catches, which equalled the South African record set by A.E.E.Vogler in 1909/10. With I.J.Siedle he put on 260 runs for the first wicket which is still the highest opening partnership for South Africa in Tests.
