Deprived of the services of Ranjitsinhji, for once it was the batting which let Sussex down. Murdoch was involved in two second-wicket century partnerships. At Trent Bridge, with Brann (105) he added 166 but eight wickets fell for 128 leaving Murdoch undefeated with 121. His steady 40 in the second innings did much to deny the home side victory. At Bradford in arguably his best innings, again in partnership with Brann (85), they put on 114 but there was another collapse, eight wickets clattering for 54. When Lancashire were beaten at Hove, although the main credit belonged to the bowlers the win was set up by the partnership of 110 on the first day between P.H.Latham (93) who was making his debut for the county and the captain (55). Of the rest, only one passed 20. For the Gentlemen at The Oval, Murdoch batted well in both innings on a slow wicket faced by a Players attack including Lockwood, J.T.Hearne, Davidson and Mead. In the match at Bristol, at least one writer considered Murdoch’s comfortable build prevented him from accepting a low chance at point given by Grace. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 295.
