The team rose to sixth in the table with five wins, nine draws and six defeats. Hove proved less of a problem with a record of won three, drawn four, lost one and only four centuries by opposing batsmen. Murdoch had his best season since joining Sussex, passing 50 in a quarter of his Championship innings. He played particularly well at The Oval, even better in the return at Hove and hit an excellent 77 against the champions at Old Trafford. At Bristol he batted four and a half hours for his 130 and in the second innings earned the spectators’ displeasure by playing stolidly when a draw was inevitable.
