Famous Cricketers No 77 - W.L.Murdoch
bowling, the innings would have been classified as first-class. Hampshire won by four wickets following Murdoch’s declaration. A feature of the season was the return to county cricket, largely at Murdoch’s instigation, of his old adversary Alfred Shaw, at the age of fifty-one. Employed by Lord Sheffield to coach, he joined the side in July and finished top of the bowling averages with 41 wickets, including 5-34 and 2-16 at Trent Bridge against his old county. On the first day at Bristol when play was called off due to a saturated wicket there was an attempt to stage a football match but a section of the crowd objected and Murdoch, Grace and several others were physically prevented from taking the field. They were jostled again on leaving the ground and had to have police protection. On the last day Murdoch took a difficult catch one handed low down at point to dismiss Grace.
