Having declared himself unavailable for the opening game at Adelaide due to the long rail journey, Murdoch joined the returning party at Melbourne and in the second innings was top scorer with a steady 64*. In the return game at Sydney he had to leave at the end of the third day to attend to business in Melbourne. This was his final first-class match in Australia. That one of the victories was over Nottinghamshire, the first for 20 years, partially compensated for other disappointments. With the bat Murdoch struggled in a season of slow wickets; seventeen times he fell to left-arm spinners. His 104 for the Gentlemen of the South at Lord’s was against a strong attack including J.T.Hearne, W.Mead, F.Martin, A.Hearne and W.Brockwell. This was Murdoch’s first hundred since 1890 and his first-ever at Lord’s. He shared a third wicket partnership of 167 with his county colleague Billy Newham (105). It was also the first Lord’s century for Newham, by now something of a veteran. Murdoch’s best effort for his county was his 80 against the champions at the Oval. He also hit 172* against Hampshire.
