While qualifying Murdoch made his debut for MCC, captaining them in his first match (a non first-class two-day game against Essex) and leading them in only his second first-class appearance for the Club, against Cambridge University at Lord’s. He also appeared in the Scarborough and Hastings Festivals and various other first-class matches. In minor cricket he played for Lord Sheffield’s XI, for the Lyric Club at Barnes and for C.I.Thornton’s XI in Norbury Park Cricket Week when one of his team mates was one of Queen Victoria’s grandsons, Prince Christian Victor. As part of Lord Sheffield’s search for talent, two one-day pre-season trial matches were staged at Sheffield Park, W.L.Murdoch’s XI v A.Shaw’s XI. Throughout the season he batted usefully without playing a substantial innings. His highest in all cricket was 98 at Sheffield Park against a touring side Heron’s Ghyll. In the Scarborough Festival he kept wicket for the Gentlemen of England against Sherwin’s XI. He was one of four Australians in the MCC side against Nottinghamshire. R.J.Pope, J.J.Ferris and J.Phillips were the others. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct St Total Total 153.
