In five school matches he averaged 85 with the bat including innings of 191 against Burton, 163 against Uppingham and 139 against Malvern. He failed with the bat against Free Foresters but captured 14 wickets for 95 with the ball, and followed up with ten wicket hauls against both Uppingham and Malvern. Apart from one early season game against the Gentlemen, Crawford did not reappear for Surrey until August. In general his form with the ball (apart from two matches) disappointed while his batting improved. His first notable performance was his seven wickets in the first innings against Yorkshire at Headingley and he followed that with his maiden first-class century in his twenty-first innings at Derby.
