In the same August week of 1914 in which Crawford began organising his training squad into a Colts team practising on a concrete wicket to play in the senior competition, New Zealand declared war on Germany. Pre-season practices were also held in the warehouse belonging to T.T.Ritchie who had led the Otago Association’s negotiations for Crawford’s services. By December the Otago Boys High School Magazine was reporting that he was also coaching a squad of 40 boys twice a week at Carisbrook. Crawford coached the Colts which won the 1914-15 competition and from their ranks several Otago players emerged. Crawford himself played for Dunedin, scoring 559 runs at an average of 50.82 and took 88 wickets at 7.18 in club cricket. Crawford was a dominant player in Otago’s four first-class matches which yielded one win, one loss and two draws. His undefeated 178 against Wellington staved off defeat and he made half-centuries against Southland in both home and away games. With the ball he took five wickets in an innings at least once in each game, with match figures of 10-61 against Southland at Invercargill and 9-109 in 31
