He scored a half-century and a century in the two games against designated New Zealand teams and was a consistent wicket-taker in all games. However, his most remarkable performance was in a minor fixture against a Canterbury XV at Temuka on 3 March when he scored 354, the highest ever innings by an Englishman abroad, out of 9-922. He added 127 for the seventh wicket with Vernon Ransford, 298 in 69 minutes with Victor Trumper for the eighth, and 213 in an hour with Monty Noble for the ninth. The innings included 45 fours and 14 sixes or 264 runs in boundaries. The Otago Cricket Association (OCA) at its March meeting resolved to approach Crawford to join them and he indicated his interest in an annual salary of £350 on 11 March. The OCA then cabled the SACA who next day sought Crawford’s personal application for release. On his return to Adelaide in April Crawford indicated that the OCA had met his terms and also offered a half-share in a sports store. He resigned from the SACA on 5 May. By the end of August the South Australian Association had secured Australian all-rounder Charlie Macartney as a replacement but the advent of war brought such planning to nothing. The one saving for the SACA was that it saved itself the kind of expense and ongoing difficulties the New Zealanders were going to experience. 30
