Reggie Foster, George Hirst, Tom Hayward, Johnny Tyldesley and Dick Lilley were unavailable; Charles Fry was not invited; and left-arm spinners Wilfred Rhodes and Colin Blythe were negligible forces. Thirty wickets at 24.73 saw him top the Test averages over Arthur Fielder (25 wickets at 25.08) and Sydney Barnes (24 at 26.08), and included eight wickets in each of the Second, Fourth and Fifth Tests. His batting returns were more modest but he did record a second half-century in the Adelaide Test Match. On the tour overall Crawford scored a century at Adelaide in the match against South Australia and his tally of 66 wickets was the highest aggregate in the English party. Prior to the Australian tour there were worrying signs that Crawford might not maintain his presence in the first-class game. From unsourced comments in his scrapbooks it was feared that ‘business claims may interfere with his cricket’ and that ‘he might remain in Australia if opportunity presents 15
