Famous Cricketers No 75 - Arthur Haygarth

1844 Haygarth had played five one-day matches at Lord’s before being selected for the Gentlemen of England against the Gentlemen of Kent, a match he was to play in on twelve occasions. He immediately showed his obduracy being not out in the first innings and when promoted to number three in the second innings stayed at the crease as wickets fell about him. In the match against Hampshire he batted for three hours in the first innings and 3½ hours in the second, where he was the leading scorer, whilst his five runs against The North took 1¼ hours. Other scores of note in the non-first-class matches were both for M.C.C.: 26 against St. John’s Wood on May 6 and 25 against Norfolk on July 25-26 where he again made top score. In all Haygarth played 14 games in this season and totalled 226 runs at an average of 10.76. Note that in the match of July 8-10 Hampshire conceded 27 and 20 extras in the M.C.C. innings.
