Famous Cricketers No 75 - Arthur Haygarth
6. SCORES OF CRICKET MATCHES IN WHICH A.HAYGARTH DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF, AND OTHER RECORDS, FACTS, DEATHS OF CRICKETERS, ETC 1842-73. ( Padwick 7664) Unpublished MSS and scrapbooks of cuttings from Bell’s Life , The Sporting Life , etc. 4 volumes. (All at Lord’s - Padwick mistakenly states that one volume is missing). 7. CRICKETER’S COMPANION ( Padwick 1088) The “Green Lillywhite” published by John Lillywhite 1865 to 1885 inclusive. James D. Coldham in an article in The Journal of The Cricket Society (Vol. 10, No. 2 p. 45) thought that Haygarth probably edited the annual from 1874 to 1879 and that he certainly had been associated with the publication since its earliest days. 8. CRICKETER’S GUIDE ( Padwick 385/1086) “Fred’s Guide” as this series of books is known was published by Fred Lillywhite from 1849 to 1866 inclusive. Haygarth contributed much information to all of these books although this was never acknowledged by Lillywhite. J.W.Goldman writing in The Cricketer of 6 June 1936 discusses a document written by Haygarth confirming his involvement – “I wrote many … things in this guide for several years, but forget what they were” - and David Smith in his Guide to Lillywhite Guides (1992) confirms, from his researches, these contributions in the preface. 27
