Famous Cricketers No 75 - Arthur Haygarth
1859 Haygarth was again in respectable form with the exception of a pair, in what was to be his final game for the Gentlemen, in July. He also played successfully in two matches for England, which are not considered first-class, when he scored 28 (in 3½ hours) against Cambridge University on June 20-22 and 32 against Oxford University on July 11-13. Another mammoth innings holding his side together, this time for The South against The North, resulted in both M.C.C. and Fuller Pilch presenting him with bats for his effort. He also bowled for the second time and took his first wicket when he was brought on to break a stand. In all matches Haygarth scored 308 runs and averaged 15.40.
