The year’s break did not affect his form and in his first match on May 21 for the “United” against XVIII of the Household Brigade he hit 77. He later played two further matches for that side. All his other games were first-class with, for the first time, more than one score over the half century mark. He was twice selected for the Gentlemen against the Players. The first encounter was the inaugural match at Kennington Oval. Despite being on the losing side on both occasions his heroic not out innings (his highest in Gentlemen v Players matches) in the second match, at Lord’s, prompted the M.C.C. to present him with a new bat. In all games he scored 363 runs with an average of 20.17. He attained third place, his highest achievement, in the national batting averages behind George Parr and George Bennett.
