With regard to consistency the performances would not be bettered although the seasons of 1857 and 1858 could be said to run this claim close. In these three seasons he was very near to the top of the batting averages and in 1855 was fourth behind George Parr, John Wisden and William Caffyn. Not only did he make the highest score of his career in the very first match but he just missed a half century on three occasions. The M.C.C. presented Haygarth with a new bat for his innings against the Surrey side although he was unfortunately dismissed first ball in the very next game which was his 150th appearance at Lord’s. He again appeared for the “United” against a Cambridge side but again failed to produce a long innings. One of his long scores was 46 for M.C.C. v Rugby School at Lord’s on June 28-29. In all he played 10 games scoring 338 runs at an average of 19.88. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 94.
