His early season’s form was so bad that he was left out of the Gentlemen’s side and he even failed to make runs against the Gentlemen of Kent where he so often prospered. The M.C.C. left him out and he therefore played against them for Sussex, which was his native county. It was only in his last three matches of the year that he showed anything like his true ability and then only one of those games, against Oxford and Cambridge Universities, was first-class. Playing at Great Malvern on August 14 he scored 31 against Worcester and for the first time bowled, probably underhand, in a match. He was immediately successful securing five wickets which were all clean bowled. It always remains a mystery why he only bowled occasionally when, as will be seen later, he was always extremely effective. On September 21-23 Haygarth appeared for XXII of Leamington against The England XI and obtained the top score, 24, in Leamington’s first innings. In all matches, 12 in total, Haygarth scored only 147 runs with an average of 7.00. It was at the match on June 26-27 that Fred Lillywhite issued his first scorecard which, unlike today, was updated every hour. Haygarth and Lillywhite were later associated with regard to a number of publications which are detailed in Appendix II. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 29.
