If tabulated averages had been published at this time he would have appeared in fourth place behind Nicholas Felix, Robert Grimston and Fuller Pilch. All but two of his games feature below, but one of those two, on May 24, was for a side got up by Earl Winterton and was his 50th appearance at Lord’s. He was top score in five innings most notably for the Gentlemen of England against Kent, where he was so in both innings, and he scored his first half century. In this match the Kent team conceded 41 extras during the Gentlemen of England’s second innings. Haygarth was now well known for his patience at the wicket and his innings for M.C.C. v Cambridge Town, which took 2¾ hours, emphasised this. His stubbornness also assisted M.C.C. to defeat Surrey at The Oval after being forced to follow on. This was the first instance of this occurring in a first-class match. Incidentally in his second innings for M.C.C. v Surrey on May 31-June 2 he was bowled by the fifth ball of an over when the umpire miscounted and forgot to call ‘over’. It is interesting to note that in the game of June 21-23 Haygarth ran 307 runs in the match whilst in the next game he hit four successive fours off C.Arnold. In all matches he scored 363 runs with an average of 17.29. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 19.
