His Test match form continued to be below the standards expected and he was resigned to being dropped for the final Test, but due to injuries to other players in the team, he retained his place and in the second innings scored 219 which almost secured victory in the “timeless Test” which was eventually drawn as the match was concluded so that the England party could catch their boat back to England.
