Famous Cricketers No 74 - Bill Edrich
1938 Edrich scored 1,000 runs before the end of May, all at Lord’s, achieving this unique feat on the last day of the month thanks to a generous declaration by Don Bradman in the match between Middlesex and the Australians which was petering out to a draw. Bradman declared so Edrich could score the ten runs required. In his first four Test Matches he was dismissed by W.J.O’Reilly on three out of six innings and had a disappointing season at the highest level. For Middlesex he averaged 64.15 scoring four centuries and eleven fifties. Again Middlesex finished second in the Championship behind Yorkshire, with Edrich scoring four centuries in Championship matches.
