Famous Cricketers No 73 - Sonny Ramadhin

were minimal. Although he headed his team’s first-class bowling averages with 24 wickets at 26.29 runs each, he played only in two Tests, claiming 3 very expensive wickets. He was replaced by Lance Gibbs, the young right-arm spinner from British Guiana, who was much more effective. Gibbs then embarked on a stellar career that yielded more than 300 Test wickets, and that was the end of the line for Ramadhin, who played his final Test at Melbourne in January 1961. His last Test wicket was that of Ken Mackay, whom he clean bowled for 74. It was his 158th, a mark no West Indian had ever reached before. Ramadhin’s record remained intact until Wes Hall surpassed it in 1966. It stood as the best by a West Indian spin bowler until Lance Gibbs eclipsed it in 1968. Ramadhin’s greatest moment on this tour came against Victoria at Melbourne in November when he captured 10/102 to establish against that state a West Indian record that still stands triumphantly after more than 40 years.
