Famous Cricketers No 73 - Sonny Ramadhin

1952/53 When India made their first trip to the Caribbean in 1952/53, Ramadhin opposed them on five occasions. He represented Trinidad for the first time since 1950 (and was destined never to do so again), and played for the West Indies in the first four Tests. Injury kept him out of the last. For him personally, it was a disappointing season. He claimed only 15 expensive wickets and was not very effective after the second Test at Bridgetown. There, however, he made a significant contribution to the West Indian victory with match figures of 7/85. On the featherbed pitches then available throughout the Caribbean, the bowlers on both sides were simply incapable of taking all the necessary wickets and only one first-class match produced a positive result. With Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott scoring prolifically, the West Indies won the series 1-0. At Bridgetown, in his first Test there, Ramadhin equalled his previous highest innings with a score of 16 not out. In his 60th match, the first Test against India at Port-of-Spain, he claimed his 300th wicket in first-class cricket when he had Subhash Gupte caught by Walcott.
