For a fourth time he was the vice-captain and under a fourth different leader, and one in Illingworth with whom there was a history of difficult relations. Isolated from the side, he completely lost his form. Even his one hundred, inevitably at Melbourne, was so hesitant that it actually played a part in Victoria’s win. In three Tests, he was dropped for the others, he made only 82 runs and in the Fifth Test even his usually reliable slip catching let him down as no fewer than five catching chances went astray. It was to quote Cardus a “grievous” experience. Almost forgotten he had some minor compensation in the sole Test he played in New Zealand, the 54 at Auckland was according to Wisden “a good display”.
