However he did not begin promisingly. A wretched start of 67 runs in six innings, including three successive “ducks” led to another review of his role as an opener. The outcome was a move down the order even though it upset the balance of a side short of specialists in that position. The result was immediate, a career-best and tourist record score of 307 against South Australia in Adelaide, followed by another Test century at Melbourne which was a vital factor in England’s victory there. New Zealand saw Cowdrey at his best, 86 at Auckland followed by 128 not out at Wellington where, despite batting at number 8 with a damaged thumb, he set a world Test ninth wicket partnership record of 163 (unbroken) with Alan Smith.
