The Ashes were well and surprisingly easily lost. It was a tour bedevilled by controversy – throwing and umpiring with Cowdrey particularly suffering from the latter. Cowdrey and May carried the batting in the Tests, Cowdrey topping the Test batting averages, despite scoring only one hundred and a fifty.
