He had announced his retirement from international cricket and was replaced by Franz Alexander as captain of the West Indies. For Barbados he struck an aggressive 47 in his final innings and bowled ten overs without result. On an easy pitch, the batsmen on both sides enjoyed themselves, registering almost 1,200 runs for the loss of 27 wickets. Sobers (183 not out) and Wazir Mohammad (134) scored centuries for their respective sides, while Hanif Mohammad, Hunte, Imtiaz Ahmed and Saeed Ahmed also registered good half-centuries. The only bowler who distinguished himself was the great Fazal Mahmood who, almost incredibly, took 8 wickets for 114 runs in 60.5 overs. The match thus ended in a predictable draw. Entering the fray at 367/7 in the Barbados first innings, Goddard had the satisfaction of sharing an eighth wicket partnership of 124 runs with the brilliant Sobers who, at 21, was then establishing himself as one of the world’s leading batsmen. By a curious coincidence, Goddard had also been Sobers’s first batting partner when the latter made his début against India at Bridgetown in 1952/53. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 111.
