Famous Cricketers No 71 - J.D.C.Goddard
Bridge when the situation seemed so bleak. Sobers batted consistently without quite doing justice to his enormous talents, and while Kanhai showed considerable promise in the county games, he was a major disappointment in the Tests. Goddard, too, had quite clearly declined from the standards he had set in 1950. Less mobile in the field, he was also less reliable at the crease, and he bowled fewer than 100 overs despite participating in 18 first-class matches. An ominous indication of what Goddard might accomplish during this fateful summer was provided in his first match of the season when he was invited, at the end of April, to represent MCC against Yorkshire at Lord’s. He managed a meagre total of 9 (av: 4.50) with the bat and took 0 for 15 with the ball. His one great moment in the Tests came at Nottingham when he scored a courageous 61, in 220 minutes of stolid batting, to help the young Smith save the match for his side. He also enjoyed one remarkable afternoon at Ilford when, in 15 overs, he captured five good Essex wickets for 20 runs. This proved to be the best bowling analysis of his entire career. He fell ill with influenza during the fifth Test at the Oval and took no further part in the tour. His last victim, in that match, was Rev.David Sheppard. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 93.
