A young side, led by Atkinson, was strengthened by the inclusion of three veteran professionals: Ramadhin, Valentine and Weekes. Having composed his differences with the WICBC, Goddard agreed to undertake the dual assignment of player/manager. None of the youngsters came to the fore, but Atkinson, Ramadhin and Weekes performed well enough to ensure that the Test series was won. Weekes, in fact, enjoyed a marvellous trip, scoring almost 1,000 runs in just 8 matches. Goddard batted so defiantly in his five matches that he lost his wicket only thrice. In 4 Test innings, he was dismissed only once. His 83 not out at Christchurch eclipsed his previous highest score in Test cricket (58 not out) and was destined to remain his personal best. On this occasion he shared a record seventh wicket partnership of 143 with Atkinson (85) which saved the West Indies from embarrassment after six wickets had fallen for 169. This West Indian record still stands. At Dunedin, in the first Test, when 7 wickets had fallen for 272, he also shared a West Indian record eighth-wicket stand of 75 runs with Ramadhin. It is, in fact, noteworthy that the only Test the West Indies lost was the one in which Goddard did not appear. But he did not bowl at all in the Tests and delivered only three overs in the whole campaign. The team played 8 first-class matches, won 6, lost 1 and drew the other.
