Famous Cricketers No 71 - J.D.C.Goddard

highlights of the tour was Clyde Walcott’s maiden century (125) in the second match. Goddard’s century, in only his 14th first-class appearance lifted his aggregate beyond 1,000 runs. He achieved this milestone in his 23rd innings. It should also be noted that this was only his 12th match and 21st innings for Barbados. By way of comparison, it would take the great Weekes, who also reached his first 1,000 runs in 14 matches, as many as 25 innings to do so. Goddard thus had a more promising start to his batting career than at least one of the ‘Three Terrible Ws’. Walcott eventually required 13 matches and 23 innings and Worrell 11 games and 19 innings to exceed 1,000 runs in first-class cricket. Four months later, Barbados visited Trinidad with familiar results. They lost the first match, in which Goddard failed, and drew the second, in which he succeeded. The first match was dominated by a fine fifth wicket partnership between the young Kenny Trestrail (destined to tour England with Goddard in 1950) and the older Tang Choon. It yielded 186 runs and took the hosts to a comfortable total of 427. Despite gallant efforts fromWalcott (4 & 103) and Worrell (74 & 61), the visitors lost by 10 wickets. In the second game, Goddard and Worrell both struck glorious centuries and shared a fourth wicket stand of 174. Barbados led comfortably on first innings but were ultimately thwarted by Gomez (108 not out) and Tang Choon (83). At the end of this season, Goddard’s batting average, after 17 matches, exceeded 55 runs per innings. It was destined to fall consistently thereafter. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 14.
