He played as a guest for Nottinghamshire against Cambridge University at Trent Bridge scoring 62 and 102 not out, his final first-class hundred. He took two wickets for 35 runs. His last first-class appearance was for MCC (he had just been elected an honorary menber of the Club), against Oxford University at Lord’s. Here he “bowled in lively style and took the wicket of Baig” ( Wisden ). He tore a calf muscle whilst batting and took no further part in the match. His great career had ended.
