He led New South Wales to the Sheffield Shield title for the third year in succession scoring 638 runs at an average of 70.88 and taking 19 wickets at only 14.31 each. He obtained the best analysis of his career against South Australia at Sydney taking seven wickets for 12 runs as South Australia were shot out for 27, the lowest ever score in a Shield game. He scored three hundreds the highest being one of 164 against Queensland when he hit one six and fifteen fours in a stay of 356 minutes. Against Western Australia he made 128 in 206 minutes with one six and sixteen fours. “The disciple of brighter cricket gave a practical demonstration of how to use the bat as an offensive weapon”, ( West Australian ). Playing his final first-class innings in Australia, for an Australian XI against Tasmania he scored 106 being “supreme and majestic in his stroking” ( Hobart Mercury ). It was a fine way to finish. He suffered a back injury batting against Queensland in his final Shield match and missed the return with Victoria at Sydney. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 196.
