He batted well enough to finish in fifth place in the Australian averages scoring 711 runs at an average of 71.10. As a bowler he bowled only 141.5 overs preferring to come on often as fourth or fifth change. Indeed he was the sixth bowler used when he took his season’s best figures of three for fifty against Victoria. He seldom failed with the bat, however, scoring hundreds in each innings for Hassett’s XI against Morris’s XI at Melbourne, the first one in 129 minutes with one six and eleven fours and the second in just 99 minutes with two sixes and fourteen fours. He played an outstanding innings against Victoria at Sydney scoring 143 out of 319 all out and batting for 268 minutes with two sixes and eleven fours. The Sydney Morning Herald acclaimed this innings: “ His control was admirable and, picking the ball to hit, he made many majestic strokes, especially on the drive”. Only two other New South Welshmen passed forty. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 172.
