It had been a long tour and the tourists were weary and a strong Commonwealth XI won easily by an innings and 259 runs. Miller’s contribution was to score 106 in his only innings and to take five wickets for just 24 runs, all top-order batsmen. Wisden described him as “the big personality of the match”. Quite! He was also appointed vice-captain of Australia against the touring South Africans. This unfancied side actually managed to draw the series two all, assisted perhaps by the Australian selectors who rested Miller and Lindwall for the final Test with Australia 2-1 up. In the Test matches Miller performed only moderately, for him. He scored 153 runs at an average of 25.50 and took thirteen wickets at 18.53. He took seven wickets at Melbourne in the Second Test and five at Sydney in the Third Test where Australia’s pace attack put South Africa out for scores of 173 and 232. For New South Wales he made a century against Queensland in his first innings of the season. Against 24
