Miller played in five of the games, captaining the team against Victoria in the absence of Hassett through injury. He made 80 against Western Australia, “a masterly display” according to the West Australian newspaper. Against Victoria he was unable to bowl owing to a back strain and the Services used nine other bowlers in the Victorian innings of 456. At Sydney he played against his future fast bowling partner Ray Lindwall for the first time. He defied the powerful New South Wales attack for 172 minutes to score 105 not out out of 204 all out a “display that was classic in courage and skill” ( Sydney Morning Herald ). He took six wickets against Queensland and, overall, his efforts earned him 463 runs at an average of 57.87 and six wickets at an average of 31.83. He was ready to burst upon the international scene.
