Famous Cricketers No 69 - G. Boycott
year exile, to score 107 and 80 not out at Trent Bridge. Then, with a marvellous sense of occasion, Boycott scored 191 against Australia, his one hundredth First-Class century, made in a Test Match on his home ground, Headingley. Thirdly, at the age of 40 he made an unbeaten 104 against the West Indies in the fourth Test, at Antigua, showing the courage and determination to recover from a ferocious fast bowling assault from Michael Holding in the previous Test match. In all One-Day matches Boycott scored 9563 runs at an average of 39.19 with seven hundreds. His aggressive 146 in the Gillette Cup Final of 1965 helped Yorkshire to a winning total of 317 for 4 in their 60 overs. Boycott was aged 29 when the Sunday League was introduced and 31 at the inception of the Benson and Hedges Cup. He performed creditably in both competitions even though the bulk of his performances in these matches were in his late thirties and early forties. Similarly, Boycott had only played in seven One-Day International matches before the age of 37 and initially failed to make much impact. At the age of 39, however, he reacted to being dropped by scoring 425 runs at an average 85.00 in a triangular tournament against Australia and West Indies. His 105 against Australia remained his only One-Day International century. Since his retirement in 1986, Boycott has enjoyed a second career as a radio and television commentator. 1962 At the age of 21, Boycott made a quiet start to his first-class career. Playing against the touring Pakistanis, while several senior Yorkshire players were rested, he scored 4 in each innings. Nevertheless he kept his place for the next match against Northamptonshire. Four championship matches yielded 142 runs with a highest score of 47. For the first time, but certainly not the last, his running between the wickets was called into question after he was involved in Taylor’s run out at Chesterfield.
