He failed by just 8 runs to reach 1000 runs in a season for what would have been the 27th time. Yorkshire did not re-employ him for the following season feeling it was time to give younger players an opportunity. His fourth match of the season, against Middlesex, was the 600th of his first-class career and the second innings of the same match was his 1000th innings. During the season Boycott scored two hundreds, 127 against Leicestershire and 135 not out against Surrey, to take his total to 151, which lifted him to fifth place in the list of first-class century makers. In his final innings he was run out for 61, playing against Northamptonshire. In view of his reputation as an unreliable runner between wickets this was perhaps an appropriate way to finish his 1014 th and last first-class innings. During the season he passed Tom Graveney’s aggregate, ending the season with 48,426 first-class runs, the most by a post-war batsman. This made Boycott the eighth highest scorer in first-class cricket. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 597.
