Famous Cricketers No 69 - G. Boycott

1984 Once again Boycott scored heavily in the Championship with 1,567 runs at an average of 62.68 and headed Yorkshire’s batting averages. No other Yorkshire batsman managed to average forty. At the end of the season, approaching his 44 th birthday, he was offered a one year contract despite the fact that, as a committee representative for Wakefield, this dual role inevitably caused some friction. The first of his four Championship hundreds was an unbeaten 104 against Kent, during which he shared a partnership of 185 with Sharp. He made unbeaten scores of 153 against Derbyshire, 126 against Gloucestershire and 101 against Glamorgan. During his innings against Gloucestershire he became the ninth player to pass 45,000 runs in first-class cricket. Later in the season he made 55 not out against Warwickshire “carrying his bat” for Yorkshire for the seventh time. During his final innings of the season, an unbeaten 50 against Sussex, he passed 30,000 runs for Yorkshire. Own Team O M R W Opp Ct Total Total 556.
